Week 21: 1/30 – 2/3

This week…

Math – We are finishing up our word problems and equations unit this week.  Students are set to take their review unit assessment on Friday.  Remember to use quick quizzes and review sheets to study for the upcoming test. We’ve practiced many problems similar to the test questions during class together, so they are great resources to study from.

Reading – Students are presenting their State Google Slides Projects during our reading time.  We will also be using the end of our reading block each day for independent reading and progress monitoring of reading levels.

Writing – Students will be using their State Google Slides Project as a resource for writing their informational essay.  Students will be writing an informational text using text features such as headings, bold print, photos, captions, etc. to help their reader’s understand the information they’re presenting.  We will be working on one subtopic each day this week.

Social Studies – As students are finishing presenting their state projects, students will continue studying the regions and locations of major US landforms and water features for Friday’s geography quiz.

Science – Students will be studying the moon this week, focusing on moon phases.  On Wednesday, students will be using Oreos to create the moon phases.  Although this might just seem like a fun activity, there is a lot of learning going on while students construct and explain their moon phases.  Our moon phases quiz will take place later this week.

Looking Ahead…

  • I was out last Wednesday as well as yesterday for training on a possible new science curriculum.  I will be piloting this new curriculum with students starting the 2nd week of February.  This is a new way of teaching science, which means it is also a new way for students to learn science – it is very hands on.  Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns once we dig in.

Upcoming Dates…

Week 20: 1/23 – 1/27

This week…

Math: Word Problems and Equations

  • This week we are moving from one-step word problems into two-step word problems.  It is more essential than ever for students to label every step of their work so that they know WHY they are doing each operation.
  • Please check in with your child to ensure they are completing their math homework/remembering sheets each night.  Although students are given opportunities to complete these pages in class, some students are not finishing them, and then are not completing them at home either.  These sheets allow me to see if students are understanding the concepts when working independently, so they really need to be finished and ready to go over at the start of class the following day.
  • Remember that Moby Max is a great online resource for students to practice and improve math skills.

Reading: Reading Informational Texts

Writing: Researching the 5 Regions of the United States

  • Students have been researching the regions of the US over the past few weeks and are currently finishing the final region: the West.
  • Students will spend a few days comparing and contrasting the 5 regions of the US before we take a quiz over the 5 regions, as well as a US Geography test next week.
